Zusammenfassung:	An alpha -oxocarboxylate is manufactured by vapor-phase oxidation of alpha -oxoaldehyde and/or alpha -hydroxyaldehyde (which may have been formed by vapor-phase oxidation of 1,2-diol) with an alcohol or olefin using oxygen and a catalyst. This method provides an economical and effective route for alpha -oxocarboxylate manufacture from such inexpensive diols as ethylene glycol and propylene glycol.
