The device (10) is provided with a supply drum (24) for printable material (34) which, by a transport means (42), is supplied step-wise to a printing means (14). The supply drum (24) and the transport means (42) have separate drive means which are controlled by a control unit. Between the supply drum (24) and the transport means (42), there is arranged a first guidance roll (66), resting on the printable material (34) and keeping it tensioned. A loop (90) of printable material is formed in the area of the first guidance roll (66). When the supply drum (24) is driven while the transport means (42) is switched off, the length of the loop (90) increases. The position of the first guidance roll (66) - and thus the length of the loop (90) - is detected by a sensor. When the sensor is actuated, the loop (90) has a predetermined minimum length. Then, while the drive means of the supply drum (24) is switched off, the transport means (42) is driven for advancing the printable material (34) by the predetermined advancing distance. Subsequently, while the printable material (34) is stopped, a printing process is performed in the printing means (14).
