The assembly comprises a first instrument ( 10 ) for distracting the knee and comprising firstly two branches ( 13, 14 ) movable relative to each other and provided at their distal ends respectively with means ( 26 ) for pressing against the tibia and means ( 28 ) for pressing against the femur, and secondly means ( 16 ) for moving the distal ends of the branches mutually apart. The distraction instrument ( 10 ) further comprises a device ( 12 ) for acting on the medial side and on the lateral side of the femur to locate the positions where at least one pair of extramedullary pins are to be implanted in respective directions lying in a common plane substantially parallel to a plane tibial bearing surface defined by the means ( 26 ) for bearing against the tibia, said plane being situated at an adjustable distance from said tibial bearing surface. The invention is applicable to implanting a knee prosthesis, in particular a prosthesis including a moving plate.
