In tufting, one pile length is cut from a pile material by a cutting edge after the formation of each loop, the cutting being effected by vibrational cutting movement of the cutting edge, to improve the cut and reduce wear. Side-by-side reciprocable loopers each have a base 12 from which a shaft 14 extends, which has a nose 16 for collecting the yarn and which further incorporates a cutting blade 32 having cutting edge 34. Each looper is coupled with a vibrating drive. It is also possible for the cutters to be installed in a joint cutter block which is connected to the vibrating drive.
