A digital audio signal is sampled at a selectable frequency and is defined by the time range in the frequency domain. Irrelevant or redundant information is separated from the signal in the frequency domain, utilising the psycho-acoustic effect. The signal is quantised and coded and supplied to a transmitter or memory as a bit stream with selectable bit rate. The bit stream contains n bits for representing the sampling frequency, and m bits for the bit rate. At least one adjustment of the sampling frequencies provides re-definition of the bit rate table such that 2 to power of m presettable combinations of sampling frequencies and bit rates are made available via the table.
