A roller drum (22) on a filter adding machine for connecting cigarette/filter groups (42) by moans of thin cover papers (46) is configured by a roll-over procedure, effecting the connection of the constituents (43 and 44), on the roll or drum (22) to be disruption-free. This is achieved by means of a pneumatic sorting means (59), associated with the roller drum (22) which is upstream of the roll-over apparatus (23), for the controlled removal of undesired, in particular incomplete constituent groups (42). The resultant advantage is that in particular sensitive machining units, such as the roll-over apparatus (23) and other further processing units, are spared from defective groups (42) which trigger disruptions.
