In a branching device for optical waveguides which leads from a main cable or local cable to a subscriber, having a tap made from a split housing, feedthroughs, splice holders and splices, as well as clamping device for branch cables and subscriber cables, it is provided that the domestic lead-in cable is prefabricated in one piece with the tap by clamping the domestic lead-in cable on the tap, inserting optical fibres at one end from the domestic lead-in cable into the mechanical splices, and fixing and locking them, and that the housing diameter of the tap is selected such that, starting from the subscriber's side, the prefabricated tap can be pushed through a connecting tube to the main cable.
