Zusammenfassung:The process brazes refractory workpieces which have to withstand high temperatures after brazing. It involves (a) brazing the two pieces at a temperature T1 using a brazing alloy fusible at T1 (e.g. a Pd-Ag alloy), having two constituents C1 and C2, one of which, C1 (Pd), can be alloyed with one of the basic refractory metals in the workpieces by forming an alloy fusible at a higher temperature, and the other, C2 (Ag), can be removed by volatilization; and (b) heat treating the pieces under vacuum to remove C2 (Ag) so as to obtain a joint brazed with an alloy having a higher melting point. The constituent C1 (e.g. palladium), when combining with the basic refractory metals (e.g. molybdenum, tantalum or niobium), preferably has a phase diagram with a peritectic point as shown in the figure.
