In an assisted steering system for a vehicle, an electric motor acts on the steering column. The system is characterized in that the additional torque applied by the electric motor is controlled in fonction of the steering torque required for steering and of the total steering torque applied. The additional torque therefore depends on the torque applied by the driver to the steering wheel as well as on the torque transmitted by the steering device to the wheels to be steered. The electric motor is actuated via an actuator (6) by a controller (5) to which an additional torque M*R, dependent on the vehicle speed, is transmitted. The controller has a dead element which produces the characteristic curve and which effects control only when the torque M*R acting on the controller (5) exceeds a certain limit value. This results in an excellent impression of contact with the road for the driver and optimally assisted steering.
