The transponder system for identifying railway vehicles comprises means 5 for transmitting electromagnetic energy accommodated at a post for reading information off vehicles and connected to an aerial 7 situated between the rails of a railway track, a transponder 1 with receiving and transmitting elements 23, accommodated on a railway vehicle 4, and means 8 for receiving data signals, accommodated at the post. The transponder 1 includes a generator (11) of clock pulses, a carrier frequency generator (13) having its input connected to the output of a unit (12) for shaping and storing data signals and its output connected to the transmitting element 3, and also a power supply unit (14) having its input connected to the receiving element 2 and supplying power to the generator (11) of clock pulses, to the unit (12) for shaping and storing data signals and to the carrier frequency generator (13).
