Zusammenfassung:	The invention concerns a method for removing books or the like from a shelf or from a stack of books, by means of an appliance that travels in a corridor and is equipped with a pick-up device that can be extended over the book. In order to enable the largest possible range of thicknesses and sizes of books to be grasped, without other devices for individual types of book, it is proposed that the book to be removed be first lifted on the side facing the corridor, and then drawn into the appliance and deposited there.
