Zusammenfassung:The process for steel smelting using iron sponge comprises smelting an iron sponge-containing metal charge, decarburising and alloying the metal and refining the steel produced to the predetermined chemical composition. An iron sponge is used which is obtained from an iron ore grade which contains alloy elements with a lower deoxidisability than that of carbon. The molten metal and molten slag which are produced on smelting the metal charge are treated together with reducing agents and calcium-containing substances in an amount necessary for the formation of approx. 1 to approx. 5% by weight of Fegeneral and of approx. 15 to approx. 50% by weight of CaO in the molten slag.
