VERFAHREN ZUR HERSTELLUNG VON 3-PHENYL-2-METHYLPROPANOL UND SEINEN P-SUBSTITUIERTEN ALKYLDERIVATEN

3-Phenyl-2-methylpropanol and p-substituted alkyl derivatives thereof have previously been prepared by using the phenylpropanols and p-t-alkylbenzaldehydes, which are difficult to obtain industrially. Peroxide-catalysed addition reaction of hydrogen bromide with unsubstituted or p-alkyl-substituted methallylbenzenes, reaction of the bromine compound obtained with an alkali metal salt of a carbonic acid and saponification of the ester obtained or transesterification using a low-boiling alcohol gives the 3-phenyl-2-methylpropanol and p-substituted alkyl derivatives thereof in good yield and high purity. Preparation of 3-phenyl-2-methylpropanol, 3-(p-t-butylphenyl)-2-methylpropanol and 3-(p-i-propylphenyl)-2-methylpropanol.
