Method for determining the volume of powdery substances and apparatus for carrying out the method

The volume of powdery substances is determined, in particular in the case of small sample quantities, by comparative measurement of an empty chamber and of a chamber which receives the sample and is filled with helium in each case, the volume of the sample quantity being derived, on the assumption of pressure equality, as the difference in chamber volumes. In order to simplify the design of the equipment and as a way of improving handling of the necessary apparatus, the empty sample chamber (1) is first evacuated and subsequently filled with helium at a pressure of, for example, 3 bar, the expanding gas is then introduced into a measuring liquid chamber (2) and the displacement of the measuring liquid in a measuring device is recorded as a zero measurement, and this procedure is repeated with a powdery substance which has been weighed out into the sample chamber (1).
