Zusammenfassung:	The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for monitoring tool breakage, a shadow image of the tool being produced by means of a linear light source extending parallel to the longitudinal axis of the tool, via imaging optics, on a linear optical sensor which is arranged parallel to the light source on that side of the tool which is opposite the latter. The first light/shadow transition serves as the measured value for the length of the tool.
