A device for measuring the area of flat material (30) to be measured, in particular leather, operates with the material to be measured continuously traversing a measuring unit (1). A receiving device (10) for the front end (31) of the material to be measured is provided, which carries a printing device (40) for the purpose of stamping the material (30) to be measured. In order to hold the material to be measured in place, a clamping device (20) is assigned to the receiving device (10). Furthermore, there are means (21) for forming a loop (32) in the material (30) to be measured, which is held in place, between the measuring unit (1) and the receiving device (10). This produces a measuring device with an integrated printing device which has only a short length in the traversing direction.
