A method of code protection for an electronic key, in particular for motor vehicles with built-in central locking, which consists of a transmitter which transmits a coded infra-red signal which is received by a receiver tuned to the code, where the code of the signal can be automatically adjusted in the transmitter and the receiver, and where the transmitter transmits a reset code following desynchronisation or following a change of battery in the transmitter or the receiver, characterised in that the reset code is activated by the tapping-in of a binary number.
