Carriage drive device in a drive apparatus for magnetic disks or the like, which has a movable base plate and a working head (44) for writing/recording or reproducing/reading, with the purpose of reducing the number of individual components in a simple design of the apparatus and of simplifying assembly. The base plate (45), which can move linearly along two guide rods (48, 48), is driven via a retaining bracket (54) by a belt (52) which can move between two belt pulleys (51, 53), the first belt pulley (51) is a cam interacting with a stop arm (71), the second belt pulley (53) is however mounted rotatably on the retaining bracket (54), the retaining bracket (54) is fitted in a sliding manner on the guide rods (48) and the retaining bracket (54) is loaded constantly by a spring, in particular tension spring (55), in the direction of the first pulley (51), the belt (52) is constantly tensioned and the first pulley (51) can be driven by a motor (50).
