A process for the production of sulfosuccinic acid diesters by reaction of maleic acid dialkylesters containing from 4 to 18 carbon atoms per alkyl group with alkali disulfites or alkali hydrogen sulfites in aqueous-organic medium at temperatures below 100 degrees C, characterized in that the sulfiting reaction is carried out in the presence of an added catalyst forming free radicals under these conditions selected from the group comprising azo compounds, azo-bis compounds, peroxy compounds and compounds in which the free radicals are formed by cleavage at carbon-carbon bonds.
