Zusammenfassung:	In a measuring instrument for motor vehicles, the individual segments of an electro-optical display unit are selected in such a manner that the maximum difference between two display values following one another in time is limited to a particular amount, the time interval between the indication of different display values being of such a magnitude that it is possible for the observer to distinguish between the display values. This avoids a restless optical impression in the case of greatly fluctuating measurement values.
