Zusammenfassung:	The process and the device can be used for lifting or depositing the topmost layer of a stack of preferably thin workpieces, in particular flexible flat textile fabrics. Automatic lifting of the topmost layer from the stack and the subsequent feeding to a processing machine or the conveying away from a processing machine and subsequent automatic stack formation are achieved with minimum technical outlay with a constantly changing stack height in that the contact pressure produced on the stack on lowering of the workpiece carrier controls, via a pressure-dependent switch, the "pickup" or "release" of the workpiece and the stroke reversal of the workpiece carrier.
