A process for the gas-cooled controlled storage of containers for radioactive materials in a direct stream of gas, having a screen, sealing elements, a cover system and an air-tight container body, in particular for the air-cooled storage of transport and storage containers for radiation-exposed fuel elements from nuclear reactors, characterised in that a partial stream of gas, separate from the cooling stream of gas which only cools the container body, is passed over the sealing elements of the container and is monitored while the cooling stream of gas is kept away from the sealing elements of the container.
