Zusammenfassung:	Prodn. of metallurgical coke (esp. for use in blast furnaces) is carried out by agglomerating particulate coking or non-coking coal and introducing the green agglomerates into a coke oven together with particulate coking coal. The improvement comprises carrying out the agglomeration step in the presence of a solvent and/or binder produced by heating coal tar at 200-600 (300-450) degrees C until polycondensation occurs. Use of heat-treated coal tar (rather than pitch) gives high quality coke and increases the productivity of the coke oven without impairing the quality of the coke-oven gas.
