Electrical insulators for use in electrochemical processes - has external shielding rings separated from each other and from anode and cathode, by air gaps, to inhibit glow discharges

The insulator may be used as a support or through bushing. The insulating part (1) is made of several pieces. At one end is a cathode element (2) and at the other an anode element (3), both joined to their respective terminals. In the space between these end pieces (2, 3) are shielding rings (4) of conducting material. The shielding rings (4) are attached to the insulation, but are sepd. from each other and from the anode and cathode end pieces (2, 3) by air gaps. These are in the form of labyrinths (5). The size and form of the labyrinths is decided with ref. to the operating conditions of the chemicals process and thus the ambient conditions of the insulators. The labyrinth construction hinders are deposition of conducting particles thus assisting in the prevention of discharges.
