Axial drive system functioning like electromotor - uses multiphase coil set allowing separation of driving and driven parts with no wear of former

The drive system has a rotating annular magnet simulated by a stationary coil set coupled to a multi-phase supply, to provide a rotating field. The number of coils and the dimensions of the axial drive are chosen in dependence on the required application, with the coils pref. supplied via a multi-phase, variable frequency AC rectifier, allowing rotation at a controlled rate. Pref. the drive system has six coils arranged in a circle and a transmission disc is positioned on the opposite side of a separation wall to the drive system, this transmission disc may be of iron for providing a hysteresis coupling, of iron an copper to obtain an eddy current coulling, or it may be an annular magnet for magnetic coupling.
