Process for the zonewise electropolishing of large-surfaced steel surfaces, especially ferritic steel surfaces, wherein the workpiece is connected to form the anode and an electrically shielded electrode is used as the cathode, characterized in that, during the zonewise electropolishing operation, the steel surface is moved upwardly past a stationary electrode which is disposed level with the electrolytic bath, the upper edge of the electrode being at or slightly above the level of the electrolytic bath.
