New water-soluble basic azo dyes are of formula: (in which D is an aromatic carbo- or heterocyclic gp.; R is H, halogen, NO2, CN, OH, amino or an organic gp.; R1 is H, an opt. substd. hydrocarbon or heterocyclic gp., or opt. substd. NH2, acylamino, acyloxy, alkoxy or OH; R2 is H or opt. substd. alkyl, cycloalkyl, aryl, alkenyl or aralkyl; A is an anion; ring B may be further substd.). (I) are used for dyeing of paper and synthetic polymers, esp. acrylonitrile and dicyanethylene (co)polymers and acid-modified polyesters and polyamides in greenish-yellow to red shades. Strong brilliant shades are obtd., with excellent fastness to washing, perspiration, steam-pressing and light. Compatibility values of 2.5-3.5 make them very suitable for use in mixts. with known dyes, esp. for polyacrylonitrile.
