Aq. (meth)acrylate! ester copolymers dispersions - compatible with cationic resins, for impregnation of fabrics and prodn. of adhesive coatings

Copolymer dispersions are made by emulsion polymerisation in presence of anionic emulsifier of (a) 40-80wt.% 2-8C alkyl (meth)acrylate ester, up to 20% of which may be replaced by butadiene in absence of vinyl acetate, (b) 19-59% methyl methacrylate and/or styrene or vinyl acetate, (c) 0.5-10% hydroxyalkyl esters of alpha, beta-unsatd. 3-5C monocarboxylic acid, (d) 0.5-4% amide of acids as in (c), (e) 0-20% acrylonitrile, (f) 0-10% of N-hydroxy- and/or N-alkoxy-methylamide of acids as in (c), (g) 0-5% glycidyl ester of acids as in (c), and (h) 0-0.5% of acids as in (c). As emulsifier is used (i) 0.5-1% Na and/or NH4 salt of a sulphated adduct of isooctyl phenol and/or 12-14C alkanols, with 15-40 mols ethylene oxide. After polymerisation is added (j) 1-4wt.% Na and/or NH4 salt of a sulphated adduct of stearyl alcohol with 60-100 mols ethylene oxide. Impregnation and consolidation of woven and non-woven fabrics of natural or synthetic fibres, esp. glass, and for prodn. of adhesive coatings. Use of (j) gives improved compatibility with aq. cationic resins.
