Zusammenfassung:	(I) Alkylates are prepd. by alkylating an aromatic hydrocarbon with a mixt. of (a) is not >95 wt. % of 15-40C branched alkenes and (b) is not 5 wt % of 16-30C straight-chain alkenes; the molar ratio of the aromatic cpd.:alkene mixt. is 10-1:1. (II) A sulphonic acid is prepd. by sulphonating the alkylate. Over-based Ca sulphonates with less tendency to foam when used as lubricating oil additives can be prepd. from the alkylates. Neutral sulphonates can be used in emulsifier comsns. for metal-working fluids. The alkylate itself can be used as a sythetic lubricant. A smaller amt. of the expensive straight-chain alkenes is used in the alkylation. Neutral sulphonates are more stable. The aromatic cpd. is esp. benzene. (a) Propylene oligomers are pref. (b) The amt. is esp. 15-30% and the alkenes are partic. 24C. Sulphonation is partic. with a soln. of SO3 in SO2. The Ca, Mg or Ba sulphonates are pref. as lubricant additives. Alkali metal or quat. ammonium sulphonates are pref. as emulsifiers.
