Zusammenfassung:Foamed ceramics, including foamed or cellular glass, are produced by preparing an aq. starting mixt. contg. (a) silicate-rich material, (I), (b) NaOH, (c) a difficulty oxidisable pore-forming agent (II) and (d) a strong oxidising agent (III). Quantity of (II) is at least sufficient to gasify (II) by reaction with (III). Mixt. of (I), (II) and (III) is dry- or wet-ground. Ground particles having low particle size are mixed with a conc. aq. NaOH soln. Aq. mixt. is kept for a long time, esp. 1-30 hrs. at a reaction temp. 80-110 degrees C, with simultaneous free water extn., until a solid prod. is formed. The dry solid prod. is further heated, e.g. to 200-310 degrees C, to remove main part of residual water. Dry prod. formed is ground to a finer particle size. A fraction of ground material, having uniform particle size, is heated in a refractory mould to 700-1100 degrees C in an oxidising atmos. The prods. are used as insulators.
