Zusammenfassung: | Ultra high molecular polyethylene is made by polymerising ethylene at 50-80 degrees C and up to 10 atmos. press. in an aliphatic hydrocarbon solvent, in the presence of a catalyst comprising an alkylaluminium component (I) and TiCl4. The (I) used is a mixt. of AlR2X (II) and Al(OR)RX (III) in which R is C2H5. C3H7, or iso-C4H9 and X is C2H5, C3H7, iso-C4H9 or H. The mol. ratio (II):(III) = 15:1 to 1:1, esp. 10:1 to 5:1, and the mol. ratio (I):TiCl4 is 1:1 to 2:1. Process gives reduced catalyst consumption and gives prods. of improved quality. Prod. is used in the prodn. of hydrofoils and lids in papermaking industry; in the textile industry for the prodn. of picks; in the chemical industry; and in medicine. |
