Filter comprises a casing contg. a hollow mandrel which supports filter elements. Each filter element comprises two filtering baffles, one each side of a spacer plate and a sleeve having radial passages to provide communication of the inner space of the filter element with the inner space of the mandrel, the sleeve being located on the periphery of the mandrel between the filtering baffles. Each element has auxiliary seals between the filtering elements on the periphery of the mandrel. A spacer device comprises auxiliary spacer plates located between filter elements and corresponding to the surface of the filtering baffle. A device recirculates material to be filtered alternately through the filter elements for washing the filter. Clamping flanges are mounted on the hollow mandrel for axially fixing the filter elements. Used for filtering polymer melts and soln. Appts. provides a compact arrangement of filter elements with a large filtering surface within a small volume chamber, enables continuous filtering at high throughput capacity and high pressure difference, and enables fine and superfine cleaning of highly viscous polymer melts and solns.
