Magnetic record disc for density records - consists of tape-wound pancake disc giving automatic mechanical tracking of reading head

A disc record is used for magnetically recorded signals. It gives a high ratio of storage surface to total surface. It permits high storage density while using the normal arrangement to guide the recording and reading heads. The recording element is in the form of a tape (4) with a magnetic coating, wound together with a narrower spacer tape (6) around a central core to form a flat disc (3) which may be supported on a metal disc for stability. The tape is flexible, and yields to the passage of the recording/reproducing head (5) by bending aside to allow reading of the face of the strip (7). This action also serves to give mechanical guidance to the head to assure tracking.
