In the embodiment illustrated the force transmitting means comprises two pull rods 6 although it may comprise a chain, cable or other tension element. The service brake actuator 2 actuates the brake blocks via a system of levers and rods. The connection part 21 is arranged not to move when actuator 2 is actuated by fluid pressure, and to ensure that brake - releasing and -applying actions of actuator 2 are unaffected by actuator 5 so long as it is supplied with fluid pressure lost motion means such as slots in pull rods 6 are provided. The disengagement means is disposed within the actuator 5-a control means 51 is visible from the outside. After the disengagement mechanism has been actuated to release the brake blocks, then upon supply of fluid pressure to overcome the spring the parts therein automatically return to their original force-transmitting positions.
