Zusammenfassung:	A process for the combined desulphurisation and conversion of asphaltene-contg. feeds comprises (a) subjecting the feed to hydrodesulphurisation (HDS) in the presence of and HDS catalyst contg. at least one group VIB and/or VIII metal component on a porous support with a pore dia. of 10-100 (pref. 20-80) Angstroms so that the feed is at least partially desulphurised, (d) contacting the product with an alkali metal at high temp. in the presence of added H2 to remove >=50% of the S content of the initial feed and to convert >=50% of the heavy (>1050 degrees F) fraction into lower-boiling products, and (c) isolating the lower-boiling products and the desulphurised feed. The process is esp. useful for treating petroleum residues contg. >30% asphaltenes.
