Recovering titania as tetrachloride from red mud - by annealing and then chlorinating in the presence of carbon
In the recovery of titania as Ti tetrachloride from red mud residues produced as a byproduct in the mfr. of Al from bauxite, the residues are initially given a preliminary anneal at 600 degrees C-1500 (800-1000) degrees C. Subsequently the residues are mixed with carbon in a ratio of 5:1-1:1 (3:1-3:...

Zusammenfassung: | In the recovery of titania as Ti tetrachloride from red mud residues produced as a byproduct in the mfr. of Al from bauxite, the residues are initially given a preliminary anneal at 600 degrees C-1500 (800-1000) degrees C. Subsequently the residues are mixed with carbon in a ratio of 5:1-1:1 (3:1-3:2) and the mixt. chlorinated at 500-100 (550-650) degrees C with gaseous Cl2. Pref. the carbon used is petroleum coke. The prod. is readily recovered in a pure state in an economical manner and it can then be further processed into titania or metallic Ti. |
