Electrolysis plant for chlorine mfr. - using bank of cells with uniform design which permits rapid repair and replacement

Appts. for mfg. chlorine from aq. solns. of alkali chloride, using at least one cell provided with connections of the electrolyte, the electric current, and outlets for the products obtd. A separator is used between the anode and cathode. The novelty is that the cell consists of two half shells clamped together by conducting bolts passing through the shell. The bolts are fitted with bus bars and are used to clamp the electrodes, the separator, and spacers made of an electric insulatant and located on each side of the separator. The cathodes are pref. Fe, Co, Ni, Cr or alloys. The anodes are Ti, Nb, Ta, their alloys or an oxide, all covered by a catalyst contg. a metal of the Pt gps. The cells consist of separate units which can easily be removed individually when repairs are required to one cell without disturbing the remainder.
