Preferably the porous coating surface thereby produced is milledto a uniform surface smoothness and has a top discontinuous layer of: polyphenylene disulphide, polybenzimidazole, polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyimide or silicone resins; at least one of finely divided graphite ZrSiO 4 , hexagonal boron nitride, talc, or chemically bonded aluminium; or carborundum; or colloidal material such as graphite, Mg(OH) 2 , or eleotrophoretically applied SiO 2 . The ceramic layer is formed on the outside of a water cooled belt so as to be in contact with molten aluminium 1 in a continuous casting machine (Fig. 1).
