Continuous sterilisation of solid suspensions - using a multistage steriliser unit

Appts. for the continuous sterilisation of liquids contg. solids comprises a pump which conveys the medium to be sterilised to a multistage steriliser in which the medium is heated to the sterilisation temp. by means of a heating jacket or by direct steam heting; the stages are sepd. by shutters, and a stirrer (wiper or scraper) is provided to impart turbulence to the medium; the sterilised medium finally passes through a turbulent-flow cooler, which simultaneously preheats the medium to be sterilised. The system achieves high throughputs without causing sedimentation of oslids or change in compsn. of the medium. The multistage steriliser can be built up from prefabricated units in accordance with the required residence time, flow conditions, etc.; such a construction permits easy cleaning.
