Zusammenfassung:Process for preparing 5-nitroimidazoles derivs. of formula (I) comprises reacting 2-(acyloxy- or aralkoxymethyl)imidazoles (II) with mercapto pyridine (N-oxides) (R=CH2 or C2H5; n=0 or 1; X=acyloxy or aralkoxy; Y=H or alkali metal). (I) are antiprotozoals useful in human or veterinary medicine for control of e.g. Trichomonas vaginalis and Entamoeba histolytica. They are more active than metronidazole and can be applied orally or topically, the usual oral dose being 10-750 mg/day.
