Zusammenfassung:The hydrodesulphurisation (HDS) of residua contg. >100 ppm. of heavy metals (Ni and V) and >3 wt% asphalt is carried out on a fixed bed of an extruded catalyst comprising a combination of Group V and VIII metal cpds. and Al2O3, the catalyst having a pore distribution such that 40-70% of the total pore vol. is in pores with a dia. of =300A degrees, =10% is in pores with a dia. of 300-3000A degrees, and 30-60% is in pores with a dia. of 3000-50,000A degrees. Heavy metal deposition on the catalysts is reduced from 50-70% (for conventional catalysts) to 20-50% of the amt. present in the oil, thus increasing the life of the catalyst.
