Zusammenfassung:	Prodn. of alumina and potassium sulphate by treating alunite with an alkali lye, and sepg. alumina and potassium sulphate by treatment with KOH is improved by treating alunite with an alkali lye at not >60 degrees C, washing the solid residue with hot water to dissolve K2SO4 and Na2SO4 and treating the washing water with KOH to separate K2SO4. Used for the processing of alunite ore contg. active silicon cpds. Formation of water-insoluble aluminosilicate is suppressed so that losses of alumina and alkalis are reduced. The conc. of the alkali lye used for dissolving alunite should not 120 g Na2O per litre. The temp. of the washing water is >=90 degrees C. The sepn. of K2SO4 from the washing water by addition of KOH is carried out at 30-40 degrees C.
