To avoid the danger of cracks appearing in the liner collar and adjacent cylinder block caused by stresses and unequal temps. between the liner and block, a connecting ring with cooling water unions and radial apertures is provided between the liner collar and the cylinder head and engine block. the connecting ring is fitted between a recess in the engine block the liner collar and the cylinder head. Between the liner and the engine block is a cooling chamber in communication with the connecting ring via the connecting rings evenly spaced radial apertures which lead to an annular chamber whose outer wall consists of a thin walled jacket into which the water return flow union is fitted.
