Zusammenfassung:Iron or steel surfaces are passivated by an aqs. alkaline soln. contg. 0.05-2% of, (a) >=1 7-10 C aliphatic carboxylic acid, (b) >=1 alkanolamines, (c) >=1 salts of nitrous acid, the molar ratio of carboxylic acid:alkanolamine being 1:0.3-5, and the weight ratio of carboxylic acid + alkanolamine: nitrite being 20-1:1 and the pH of the soln. being 7.5-10. Pref. the carboxylic acid has 8 or 9 C and the molar ratio of carboxylic acid to alkanolamine is 1:1-3. The weight ratio of carboxylic acid + alkanolamine: nitrite is 10-3:1. The pH of the solution is adjusted with alkali and a non-ionic wetting agent in an amount of 0.005-0.3% may be added to the solution.
