1406709 Adhesive compositions CANADIAN INDUSTRIES Ltd and ICI UNITED STATES Inc 10 July 1973 [14 July 1972] 33089/72 Headings C3B C3R and C3P [Also in Division B5] An adhesive composition comprises (A) either (I) a thermosettable copolymer of at least one α,#-ethylenically unsaturated non-reactive main monomer, at least one carboxyl group containing α,#-ethylenically unsaturated monomer and at least one α,#-ethylenically unsaturated epoxide group containing monomer, or (II) a thermosettable mixture of a copolymer, having a major amount of a non-reactive α,#-ethylenically unsaturated monomer and a minor amount of at least one carboxyl group containing monomer, with an epoxy resin, and (B) a resorcinol/formaldehyde latex mixture. I may be a copolymer of (a) styrene, alkyl(meth)acrylate, itaconates, maleates, vinyl acetate and vinyl chloride, (b) acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic, maleic or fumaric acid and (c) glycidyl acrylate or methacrylate. In preparing II the ethylenically unsaturated monomers may be polymerized in the presence of the epoxy resin, e.g. a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A. The first component (A) may be in the form of an aqueous dispersion and may contain a cross-linking catalyst, e.g. a tertiary amine or a complex of zinc acetate with NH 4 OH. (B) may comprise a resorcinol formaldehyde condensate together with a terpolymer of butadiene, vinyl pyridine and styrene, a copolymer of styrene and butadiene or mixtures thereof, natural rubber or butyl rubber. The adhesives are useful in adhering glass, textiles and metals to unvulcanized rubber. The material to be adhered may be initially treated with components (A) and (B) with a short pre-cure, e.g. 90 secs./465‹F., prior to contact with the unvulcanized rubber.
