The adhesive may contain an acrylate polymer, e.g. an acrylate copolymer or terpolymer. The water repellent layer may consist of or include one or more of ethylene/ vinyl acetate copolymers, microwaxes, paraffins and polyhydrocarbons. Suitable non reactive substances include zinc sulphide, titanium dioxide, silicon dioxide and/or silicates and calcium carbonate. A three layer wall paper comprises water repellent priming layer 2 incorporating affinity controlling component 4 applied to wall paper 1. The layer 2 carries a water activatable adhesive film 3 based on an acrylic resin copolymer or terpolymer. A four layer wall paper consists of raw paper 1 having a water repellent priming 2 incorporating an affinity controlling component 4.
