Light conducting glass fibre - with core and mantle regions of differing refractive index

A large dia. glass rod is heated almost to melting and then subjected to a laser beam longitudinally to heat the core to a higher temp. than the mantel area and drawn to a fibre. The glass is dosed with oxide(s) of ti,Zr,Nb,Ta and Al.
