Zusammenfassung:	Title betonites are prepd. by (i) swelling natural alkaline earth metal bentonites using =10% w.r.t. dry wt., of an electrolyte having a peptising activity, pref. an Na salt, partic. Na2CO3, Na phosphate, -polyphosphate and/or - hexametaphosphate, in order to disintegrate the montmorillonite lamellae, and (ii) reducing the no. of charges of the disintegrated adsorption surfaces by setting pH to 5-7, using an acid having a high degree of dissociation, pref. HCl H3PO4, AcOH and/or tartaric acid. Steps (I) and (II) pref. take place in a system contg. >=10% water, at 20-110 (esp. 40-80) degrees C.
