The filaments are stretched by rolls 6 and heater 6', which may also produce crimping. The filaments pass in parallel array between perforated rollers 7, containing stationary sectors 7' supplying compressed air and, still in parallel array, strike the perforated surface of drum 8, to which suction is applied by sector 8'. The suction produces a random web. The drum may be replaced by a perforated conveyor belt. A hot air duct may be inserted between rolls 7 and drum 8 to crimp the filaments. The web may be consolidated by needling and / or by the application of adhesive or by melt-bonding the filaments by hot calendering between perforated drum 12, supplied with heated steam or gas, and perforated belt 13. The plastics film may comprise polyethylene, polypropyene, polyester, polyamide, polyacrylonitrile, polytetrafluoroethylene or polyvinylchloride. The film may be produced by the coextrusion of 2 polymers of differing melting point through a single nozzle, to give filaments having varying proportions of the 2 polymers, or through a double layer nozzle to give filaments having the 2 polymers "side by side". Alternatively the filaments may be obtained by cutting 2 different films. |
