The metal components may be present as the metals, oxides or sulphides. The alumina may contain silica or boria. The phosphate solution may be an aqueous solution of alkali or alkaline earth phosphates, phosphoric acid or ammonium phosphate. The amount of phosphorus in the final support is suitably 0.5-15% wt. In the Example alumina hydrogel is contacted with ammonium phosphate, nickel nitrate and ammonium metatungstate or phosphomolybdic acid followed by drying and calcination.
